Here is the thermometer that I use.

I use them for brewing, and absolutely depend on them for another hobby where monitoring temperatures is very inportant.  I have three of them and have been using them for over two years now. Their performance is flawless.  Haven't even had to change batteries.

Accurate and precise, with a 0.1° F resolution.  I've checked them side by side with lab grade mercury thermometers and they are dead nuts.

Can be switched to centigade readout.  Has high and low memory and a programable temperature alarm.

An excellent value.

I was more thinking kettle on hot rocks..... Guess that's not practical....kettle may melt.... :o

shoes may melt!

I have melted many pairs of hiking boots on hot lava.  They last about 3 months.  More than once I have left smoking bootprints across newly emplaced lava.  That's what the IR thermometer is for.  Been trying to calculate the ROI on my thermometer vs buying new boots...

Guess I ought to figure out how to post some of my lava photographs here...

Interesting.  I'd have thought pilots got paid a lot more than that.  200k isn't bad, I don't suppose.  But that's the top...to think that athletes get paid MILLIONS...for what?  To entertain us?  It's ridiculous.  They're living their dreams AND getting paid more than anyone else in the world to do it.  Ludicrous.

And then there are movie actors...  the pay to skill ratio there has got to be the highest of all.

Hmmmm, brewing on a lava flow...... ;D

Well kind of... I live on the flank of an erupting volcano, Kilauea.  My home sits on a 400 year old flow, and that's where I brew, so I guess I do brew on a lava flow.

The erupting vent Pu`u `O`o is 14 miles from my house.

Thermapen schmermapen. Here's what you REALLY need: http://www.diytrade.com/china/4/products/3198797/Infrared_thermometer.html

I have one of those I use when I'm out on the active lava flows.  They only measure surface temps.

Whoa!  as I was sitting here writing this we had a bit of an earthquake, I'm guessing around M3.5 -3.8

Real-time earthquake data:  Here

Hah!  M3.6  I'm getting pretty good at it...

<edit>  The scientists had a look at the seismometers and uped it to a M3.8

You guys are funny.  It's like putting a tachometer and an altimeter on your trail bike.

Guess I needed a winky emoticon there.

The Winkie Country is a division of the fictional Land of Oz. It is distinguished by the color yellow; this color is worn by most of the local inhabitants and predominates in the surroundings.

This was the country ruled by the Wicked Witch of the West before Dorothy "melted" her with a bucket of water in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Since then, the Tin Woodman ruled over the Winkies as their Emperor. The Winkie Country is separated only by the Deadly Desert from the underground Dominions of the Nome King.

Dang that global warming!
::)

Climate change is real, and extreme weather is an effect.

Yes, it's great!  I blame global warming for everything.  It's so convenient!

Twenty Eight Degrees Farenheit BELOW Zero  Last night.
I guess I should be glad the wind was not howling at 40 mph in conjunction with that.

Dang that global warming!

"Ho hum... I'm bored.  What you wanna do tonight?"
"Oh I don't know... What you wanna do tonight?"

"Hey I got an idea!  Let's contort ourselves into pretzels and jam ourselves into a half cubic meter box!"
"Yeah, that's a great idea!"   ::)

Reminds me of an X-File...

All Grain Brewing / Re: Mystery Box?????
« on: February 09, 2011, 01:47:18 AM »
When you do the same thing over and over you begin to notice the small stuff that you miss when you change everything each time.  I brewed my all-grain Munich Helles recipe a gozillion times in a row early on in my brewing.  That's when I was able to figure out when starch conversion was complete just by the consistancy of the mash.  It would have taken a lot longer to figure that out if I had brewed a different recipe each time.

(I prefer to call it the Harley Davidson Method though)   ;)

The wife has sat next to me operating an automobile at 130 mph on a public highway.....

There are very few very hard and fast rules in our marriage..... not screwing around is one of them. Me staying away from bikes is another......

FYI = this thread is for people who ride motorcycles. Not hen pecked homebrewers.  ;) :P

That's cold.   ::)
