What's Your Favorite Bohemian Pilsner Yeast?
« on: December 01, 2011, 06:49:46 am »
I'll be brewing my first bohemian pilsner in a few weeks.  I've been considering using Wyeast 2000, but I'm open to other suggestions.  What's your favorite yeast for a bo-pils?

I've made two Pilsner Urquell clones using 2001 which came out great.  Needs a big starter though or you will have to wait out the sulpher for a few months while it cleans up.

Not having done many Bo-Pilsners, I did like the results for one brewed last year.   It had Wyeast 2001 (PU "H" strain) and 2278 (PU "D" strain).  The batch was split into 2 fermenters and then blended 1:1 when finished.  With some long lagering time it was a fine drinker in the summer.

I agree with this.

I used WLP800 last spring. I really like how it turned out. It takes a while to complete fermentation and lagering, but Czech Pils is right at the top of my favorites.

Regarding a starter, how big are you talking?  My SOP for lager starters is two smackpacks/vials in 2L of wort. I use a stirplate.

That's pretty much spot on according to Mr. Malty.
