....Stroh's bock changed my life. Kind of scarey, huh?

Only a little bit.  ;D
Back in the college days (1970-75)   I drank a fair amount of Pabst, Schaefer, and Ballantine bock beers.
They were all pretty good, too, especially the Pabst version.

I remember being told by more than one person that bock beers were made by breweries when they did there annual brewery cleaning.  Bocks are made from all of the guck settled to the bottom of the fermentors.  Too funny!

I remember that story.

LOL.    I remember that story too.
The embarrassing thing for me to admit is that at the time, I believed it.
Even more embarrassing to admit:  that's actually what prompted me to want to try the bocks.   :D

I came of age in Utah in the 80s, where Lowenbrau Dark was exotic. There were some imports around but they were all in the State Liquor stores at ridiculous mark-ups. For a college student, anyway. I visited a friend in Boulder CO in 1992 and Redhook ESB really knocked me out. Years later, I think it's pretty bland, but I hear they've dumbed down the recipe.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Racer 5. Was working a student programming job in college and a co-worker recommended it at the pub on campus. First sip was intense, halfway through the glass it was game over.

let me guess, ackes place? did youcatch and The Wards shows back then? Man I always wished I had.

You got it.  Rasputins and Last Chance were our usual haunts as well.  After a while, we started going to J.P. something ( can't remember...those brain cells are long gone ) on the same block as The Chance.  It was mostly townies, but since I was raised in VT, thems was my peoples :)

Never saw the Wards but then I could have walked into Nectar's and seen Phish anytime I wanted but never did.

mmm nectars gravy fries. one of the most satisfying and disgusting things on the face of the planet. But late at night a little drunk and very stoned there is very little that compares to the joy of a giant pile of fries and a bowl of greasy turkey gravy. And I am a life long vegetarian!

Up until the point i first had a Shiner Bock, I never cared for beer. Although it is not the best beer, it was the first one I could taste and actually liked.  It has been smoothe sailing ever since.

That particular brew has been the gateway beer for many. Have some in the fridge right now... ;)

I had tried several "different" beers (read as "not Coors") throughout college but never really had any interest in anything (other than Coors) until the summer of 1990 when I was working out of the Twin Cities for the historical society. One Saturday morning a friend took me to the Summit brewery. When we got done with the tour we were each handed three tokens for three free beers. My first pint was Summit Extra Pale ale. I took one sip and my eyes opened like they never had before. Delicious flavours! I was hooked. And that was just the beginning . . .

I don't know if i ever had a single beer that enabled that a-ha moment, i guess the closest would be guinness. My grandfather was renowned for his love of cheap beers like Olympia, Ballantine, Schaefer, etc so i grew up sipping those.

I did join a 101 beer club at a local sportsbar and had a ton of great beers, i guess that's what really got me into it. plus, the black satin jacket i got for drinking the 101st beer was damn sexy.

Paulaner Salvator changed my life.
21 years old, standing in front of the liquor store cooler...
Pondering what to buy, instead of Icehouse or Miller Lite.
I don't know what made me buy it, but I'm damn glad that I did.
