Personally I think owls are really cool, and there's not much spookier than seeing silent death swoop down over a field at dusk.  That said, here in OK, I've got several friends of Native American Indian origin who are seriously freaked out by them; there's some real significance in folklore and tradition.

Especially a white one!  :o

Isn't there a white owl in Harry Potter?  Seriously sinister.

That is the coolest looking owl I've ever seen. Pretty elusive in the snow...bet that guy eats well.

We have some Barn Owls that nest behind our property.

Ya'll just remember. Seeing an own to the native americans was/is a sign of death. I love to see them on the rare chance I do. But be sure to be wary and respectful.

Don't white owls make cigars?

I hear them a lot more often than I see them, and I always hear them a lot this time of year.  They're Great Horned Owls by the sound of it, although they could be different owls with similar calls.  Even with the doors and windows closed, they are loud enough to hear over the TV.

Apparently, Hawaii just got its first record of a snowy owl, showed up at the airport in the capital.
What a problem bird, couldn't catch it, it wouldn't leave, so they blasted it.  Yep, shot it dead. ::)

I have not been able to find any local news reports about a snowy owl at HNL.  I did find the topic mentioned on several blogs.

Not that I am doubting that a snowy owl would be found in Hawaii.  My son is a wizard.  Certainly the owl was delivering mail.

As much of a Harry Potter fan as I am, I will never forgive JK Rowlings for killing off Hedwig.

We do have an endemic owl here in Hawaii.  The pueo.  They fly at day and night.  They are majestic.

There is only one success: to be able to spend your life in your own way.

Whoos awake...Me Toooo :)  owls start to breed early.

Isn't it like 2000 miles out there?  It must have been a wizard messenger owl.

Interesting that your endemic and endangered owl is viewed as a good omen to the natives.

I caught this little guy in a mist net once.  Pygmy owl.

ever see an owl petting a dog?
Incredible....I had contact with a pair of wild owl fledglings about that size  they
were hissing and not happy to see me in their area.

If you zoom back, you can see the sighting in Hawaii, and click for more information.

Silly Hedwig, wouldn't get off the runway.
