Happy Winter Solstice, the original winter celebration.

THE SUN IS GOING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Wait... never mind ::)
I was being more or less tongue & cheek with that statement.  I get annoyed at people who assert one over the other.  What does it matter? Holiday cheer is all that matters, spread the love, not the divisive attitude of, "No it's this! Not that!"

Here here! I meant nothing disrespectful. I was born and raised a naked pagan baby but always loved christmas with the grandparents and chanukah with the in laws and kwanzaa at the hippy day care (a place where very stoned people can get adult supervision?). I have never celebrated ramadan but then it's not so much a celebratory event as I understand it.  And I always celebrate with heavy metal carols!

My Mama was always asking if I was raised in a barn. Once I told her "I don't know, I must have been to young to remember". What I do remember was that was a mistake.

Merry Christmas and hopefully the Sun will resurect from its Winter death.

BTW...Don't run with scissors.
Sweet Caroline where the Sun rises over the deep blue sea and sets somewhere beyond Tennessee

Methinks, mayhap you arrived at Christmas a week ahead of everyone else?

The winter solstice is tonight at 12:30 Eastern Time.  So today and tomorrow are pretty much equal as to being the shortest days.  Not that one can tell here for all of the overcast.

Merry Christmas one and all.  Have a Happy New Years.  Brew some great beer in 2012.

We've made it around the bend.  The days are getting longer again.  I feel better already!

Can one even notice the change in the days length there?  Just asking, never been that far south.

Yeah, 'made it around the bend' for Carl means instead of 11.8 hours of daylight, he can get back to the standard 11.9.

And where you live the swings are much more noticeable.  Lived at the 50 parallel (50.08), and the short winter days were made up for with the long days in summer.

Down here at 19⁰ north lattitude the sunset is at around 5:45 for winter solstice and 7:10 for the summer solstice (we don't do daylight savings time here).  That's at sea level.  You can gain a few extra minutes by heading up to the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.  They are almost 14,000 feet high.  (thats 4267m for you metric types)

Shortest day 10:56:34
Longest day  13:19:21

You know that the earliest sunrises and latest sunsets (or visa versa) don't happen on the solstices, yah?

According to the Mayan calendar we have started our last orbit.   :o
