Massive Starter Krausen
« on: January 11, 2012, 05:46:34 pm »
Last night I pitched a rinsed slurry of Wyeast 1469 West Yorkshire to 1L of starter wort.  After I got home from work today, this is what I found...

I've made a starter for nearly every one of my 120+ batches in the last six years and I've never seen this before.  Did I overpitch or something? ???

You probably pitched a lot (more than a smack pack) of very active yeast in a small starter.  Feeding frenzy ensued.

They look happy to me!  Maybe you didn't need the starter after all ;D

Same thing happened to me last month.  Half a previously refrigerated slurry of WLP001, one quart of starter in a 1/2 gal growler, and yeast everywhere 4 hours later.  I've never had a starter need a blow off tube.  Kind of defeats the purpose really...

There was about 50% more krausen this morning.  :o This is third generation yeast that I last used for a brown ale about a month ago. I was just trying to wake it up. Guess it's ready to party!
