Having just finished a butter and Marmite sandwich with a beer chaser, I gots to wondering two things:

1) Am I one of like 3 Americans who really likes Marmite? It's weird, it's sticky and man is it strong, but yet, yum.

2) Aside from the super traditional butter and marmite toast or sandwich - what else can be done with this stuff? I dare suspect that this has some potent vegetarian applications in terms of supplying the "umami" factor in a dish.

I have spread yeast cake on toast and butter. I love it. Not nearly as salty either.

Oh and Vegamite is much better.

I think I tried (and hated) Vegemite back when the song first came out. I may need to revisit, it is 3 decades later and tastes have changed.

No way!  Marmite rules.  Man, I wish I could still find it locally.  Used to buy the BIG jar.  My son and I love it.

And yes, there are many uses for it other than toast or cheese and pickle sandwich's (my version not traditional English)

Marmite is great stuff (as is Vegemite).  Great on toast.  Because of the intensity of flavor, it is designed so that you just spread a very thin film of it on your 'travel to the mouth' media.  If you use too much (as is the American tendency with almost everything.  LOL)  there's no question that it's a bit salty and overpowering.
But used the correct way, it's tasty stuff for sure.

I have never had Marmite, but I have become a big fan of Vegemite in this last year.  We have an Australian aviation unit attached to our task force, and they are never in short supply.
One of my greatest joys is the look on the faces of the Americans when I convince them to try "Australian chocolate" on toast.  Of course I eat a big bite to show them that it is OK to eat

Funny thing is, I can tolerate fleischmanns dry yeast in my pie hole...

Yep, I'm another Yank who enjoys Marmite. As mentioned, the only thing you have to know is to spread it very thinly. I love it on my toasted homemade bread.
