Marmite
« on: February 10, 2010, 01:44:53 am »
Having just finished a butter and Marmite sandwich with a beer chaser, I gots to wondering two things:

1) Am I one of like 3 Americans who really likes Marmite? It's weird, it's sticky and man is it strong, but yet, yum.

2) Aside from the super traditional butter and marmite toast or sandwich - what else can be done with this stuff? I dare suspect that this has some potent vegetarian applications in terms of supplying the "umami" factor in a dish.

I have spread yeast cake on toast and butter. I love it. Not nearly as salty either.

Oh and Vegamite is much better.
Beer, its whats for dinner.

I bought some finally, it is an acquired taste I have yet to acquire, but I've not sworn it off either.

Vegamite is much better.

made famous by "Men at Work"

I couldn't acquire the taste for it though.

Did you hear they were getting sued for that song, almost 30 years later?  Some 75 year old Aussie kids song....Crazy.

They say you learn something new everyday. I'll keep a lookout for this product. I'd like to try it.

I think I tried (and hated) Vegemite back when the song first came out. I may need to revisit, it is 3 decades later and tastes have changed.

Wonder how hard it would be to make homebrew yeast into Marmite?

No way!  Marmite rules.  Man, I wish I could still find it locally.  Used to buy the BIG jar.  My son and I love it.

And yes, there are many uses for it other than toast or cheese and pickle sandwich's (my version not traditional English)

Gotta love that autolyzed yeast!  ...and MSG!

Marmite is great stuff (as is Vegemite).  Great on toast.  Because of the intensity of flavor, it is designed so that you just spread a very thin film of it on your 'travel to the mouth' media.  If you use too much (as is the American tendency with almost everything.  LOL)  there's no question that it's a bit salty and overpowering.
But used the correct way, it's tasty stuff for sure.

Yum.

I have never had Marmite, but I have become a big fan of Vegemite in this last year.  We have an Australian aviation unit attached to our task force, and they are never in short supply.
One of my greatest joys is the look on the faces of the Americans when I convince them to try "Australian chocolate" on toast.  Of course I eat a big bite to show them that it is OK to eat  ;D
Yeast infections are only bad when they don't happen to wort.

 :-\  I tossed the only bottle I ever obtained....after a small sample.

Funny thing is, I can tolerate fleischmanns dry yeast in my pie hole...

as was mentioned, I may have to re-try as tastes change

Yep, I'm another Yank who enjoys Marmite. As mentioned, the only thing you have to know is to spread it very thinly. I love it on my toasted homemade bread.
