In lieu of baseball being just around the corner ....
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:41:43 am »
I whipped up this over the weekend ....thoughts ?   Only 31 days until pitchers and catchers report  ;D

Big Phoppy IPA

5 gallon batch

Grains:
8oz Caravienne
8oz Gambrinus Honey
8oz Carahelle
25 mins @ 155 deg

Extract
6lbs Pilsen LME
1 lb Light DME
Adjunct
1 lb rice syrup solids

1oz  Citra 60 mins
1oz  Citra 45 mins
1oz  Ahtanum 28 mins
1oz Cascade 15 mins
1oz Cascade 5 mins

Just worked this out on paper and haven't run it through Brewsmith so I don't have any estimates ...my only concern is the hops I don't know if I have enough to hit IPA IBU levels. I have used Citra, Cascade and Amarillo in the past with very good results I really like their flavor profile , just couldn't get any Amarillo so I subbed the Ahtanum.

I forgot the yeast ....I will be using Coopers dry yeast 7 gr for this batch I normally use liquid but  .... I have used this before for IPA's and find that it really eccentuates the citrus of the hops.

It's hard to say if it is enough BUs without knowing the alphas of the hops.

I haven't calculated the gravity either, but 7g of yeast might be pushing it for my guess at the gravity (over 1.060).  You might want to double up on the yeast.

I can pitch another pack... I have a few in the fridge.

Citra is much better served in aroma and flavoring additions IMO especially given its cost and availability. With your current recipe though it'll be well into IPA ibu's, not knowing the AA's you've got it could get into double IPA range.

How about this:
1oz  Citra 60 mins  avg AA 13.2
1oz  Cascade 45 mins  avg AA 7.1
1oz  Ahtanum 28 mins  avg AA 4.5
1oz Citra 15 mins avg AA 13.2
1oz Cascade 5 mins  avg AA 7.1

I don't have the hops yet ...they are in the mail.

Do you have /are you getting any bittering hops . Those three are all considered aroma hops. You can use them as you wish of course.  I would save at least a 1/2 ounce each of the citra and cascade for dry hopping. But you gotta make what you want to drink ;)

No "bittering" these are what I am using ....I thought about Chinook's but I really like the flavor profile of the Citra and Cascades.

I'm just hoping Buster Posey is back behind the plate for the Giants this year.
