You can instal a permanent dial thermometer and just walk up and look at it at any time and save way more $$$$$ if that's the way you look at it.  ;)

Well if you start with RO, it's probably close enough...

Missed where he said he used RO water.
Mort said he started with RO water and adjusted from there.  That why I said what I said.

You can install 10 permanent dial thermometers to get a reading from around the mash, or you can get a thermapen and just move it. :)

Mine is a toy, I'm not going to pretend.  It is useful for food and beer, but not required.  My refractometer isn't required either.  Neither are my perlicks.  The list goes on and on. ;)

There are dial thermometers on the half barrels I brew in.  They are calibrated using the thermopen.  A very accurate and precise toy, that is used to calibrate the other toys.

The wife finds it handy for cooking.

BTW if you vorlauf you will get your temp range more or less even throughout. One dial thermo is all you would need.

i am boycotting temperature and ph until a concensus is reached 8)
actually i use one of the pampered chef roast probes for my mash,  i also noticed at home away from home depot they have similar to thermopens that are reasonably cost effective.

i am buying a refractometer now. (just to start more discussions)

Oh, I wouldn't do without my refractometer. Talk about saving time, no thermometer even comes close.

Did I say my Thermapen is my favorite of all brewing gadgets?

There...now I did.  ;D

My meter and refractometer are just as valuable but the Tpen is my favorite. ;) 8)

If that is your favorite gadget I have to say I feel really bad for you. I think you should get a heated/cooled conical right away and I have a feeling you will change your mind .... big time. ;)

I have a 14.6gal Blichmann conical, however it's not jacketed. It's a great brewery piece but the Tpen rules.  ;)  ;D
