StarSan Smells Like Sulphur
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:35:19 am »
I mixed up a fresh batch of StarSan with distilled water and after a couple days in my bucket with the lid on it smells slightly of sulphur.  It's not strong.  pH checks fine.  it does not remain in or on anything sanitized with it.

Why does it smell at all?  It never has before and I leave it in my bucket for days.
Cheers,

Timmy

I get that whiff of sulpher from time to time off my starsan. As far as I can tell it doesn't affect the performance of the solution.

I get that depending on the type of plastic I'm sanitizing. Cheap plastic airlock = sulfur smell. Betterbottle = no sulfur.

Wow...This timing is perfect.
I mixed up a batch in a corny the other night & got a huge sulfur whiff.
...Scared me.
After some investigation, it almost seemed as if the smell was on the rubber handles.
But, it was strong enough that I didn't figure it out, for certain.

+1

I get it too. I think it's a by-product of the reaction between phosphoric acid and organic soils. It's basically a sign that you have to better clean what it is that your trying to sanitize.

In any case, I do not get it after a day with the top off or as a residual odor in any of the kegs i just sanitized.  Hmph.  Weird.
