Bottling mead with german pop-tops
« on: February 11, 2012, 05:38:53 pm »
Can this be done safely...?

I have a few racks of them and would rather use them than buying a bunch of 375ml bottles, corks, and corker.

Just worried it will blow the bottle or at a minimum blow past the seal.

Any thoughts?

BTW I made the Austin Trad Mead kit and the Numbers were right on +-.002 the mead has been racked twice since production Thanksgiving 11.

TIA

I bottle my mead and wine in Grolsch top bottles without issues.  Go for it.  Carbonated or not doesn't matter.  If they overcarbonate, no worries.  Pop the tops to let out the excess pressure, and flip the tops right back on.  Do that a few times and the pressure will decrease to normal.  Actually kind of convenient if you're worried about overcarbonation at all.  Of course, if you're worried about overcarbonation, then you should hold off on bottling altogether, but anyway...... Yes, it's doable, and without issues.
