Hop identification question
« on: February 24, 2012, 11:30:12 am »
Has anybody tried Odell's seasonal red ale? It has a really nice fresh hop aroma. For those who have tried it, does anybody know what kind of hops those might be? Or how they got such and incredible aroma?

Their website describes it as "a variety of aggressive American hops" at 50 IBU. Thinking mainly late adds of Amarillo, Simcoe and one of the C-hops. Possibly some dry-hopping as well.

Amarillo and Simcoe sound right. I remember it being piney and grapefruity. Maybe Chinook too? I don't have as much experience with the other C's, but I don't think they use Cascade.

I was drinking an Odell Red the other day. It has a SUPER piney resinous aroma, few other beers smell quite like that one, it used to be a favorite of mine. My guess would be tons of simcoe and chinook, and possibly some sort of hop extract.
