What do the boxes mean?

What do all of the colored boxes under your user name represent?

I was wondering this as well.  The punatic has lots of boxes, tom there, not so much. 
I get the colors; ie red blue yellow...but quantity?

If you suck-up you get stars.  If you're naughty you get boxes.
