5L Flask too big for a 1L starter?
« on: March 07, 2012, 07:58:13 pm »
I have a 5L flask and a 1L flask and need to make a 1L starter. I thought of using the 1L flask but am concerned of little head space and blow off. I was wondering if the 5L flask would be too big for a 1L starter? That is a lot of surface area and 1L of wort would not have that much depth to it. Is this even a concern?

Thanks!

Clint

Nope. Go ahead and do it. You'll be fine. The only problem would be in handling that large hunk of glass.

Since you want oxygen in the starter, a larger flask is better.

Bingo!  And no airlock so the O2 can get in there.

I usually just use a loose piece of aluminum foil cupped over the flask lid. Ditched the airlock for a starter a while back..
