Strangest thing you have found in your bag of grain?
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:47:57 pm »
I have found assorted bugs, sunflower seeds and the nastiest is an old finger nail. Called the brew old finger nail, it never made it in the mash though.

you mean st vitus's dance beer yes? St Anthony's fire is a real thing unrelated to ergot. not that st. vitus's dance is actually related to ergot either.

To Quote Wikipedia here
"St. Anthony's fire (also known historically as Ignis Sacer and Holy Fire) may refer to one of the following diseases:

Ergotism (this meaning particularly common in France and Germany)"

The brewpub in Artesia gave me a bag of Briess two row once because the brewer found metal chunks in it.  It was a seized bearing, probably from a conveyor belt used to fill the sack.  I just poured the malt over a big magnet before I poured it into the mill and got all the pieces out, there really wasn't very much.
Otherwise just the random crap that is associated with any agricultural product-twigs, seeds of other plants, etc.
