Heineken, Shaken - not stirred. (WTF)
« on: April 05, 2012, 09:35:15 am »
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/04/martinis-no-longer-heineken-to-debut-as-james-bonds-new-drink/

So is he going to switch cologne from Floris No. 89 to CKOne? Is he going to wear Gap instead of Jermyn street and Saville row? Drive a (EGAD) Toyota instead of an Aston Martin?

I really liked the new Casino Royal, but jeez are they running this into the ground or what?

“Movies tend to do placements that don’t make them have to change any of the plot,” he said. “The brand is actually making a statement because everyone knows that James Bond has got the best gadgets [and] best car, and [now they'll ask] ‘What does it mean if he’s now drinking Heineken?’ It means Heineken is the best beer, theoretically.”

I would say it's maybe a combination of both, but more so because he's drinking Heineken, for me.  But I guess I don't really care either way, it's a movie, one in particular I've never gotten into.

Ahh but this Bond is really from the lower classes so a beer should resonate with him. Obviously, he's become accustomed to the finer things in life. For the cover's sake of course... ;)

They lost me a few films back when they were playing Texas hold'em in the casino instead of baccarat.
Texas hold'em?    please...

If he pulled out a bottle of Westvleteran 12, or even a Canadian Breakfast Stout, I'd think that was pretty awesome. A Heineken just screams tacky to me. James Bond should never shill a product you can get at a gas station.

LOL...reading around on the forums, I really can't believe how seriously people are taking this.
It's only a movie and even moreso, it's only beer.   :D

Besides...while Heineken may not be top of the heap,  when you get right down to it it's not a terrible product either (especially on draught or in cans).  It's probably still one of the better beers of its type.

Kind of ironic that beer snobs love to diss Heineken.
At one time, long ago and in a land far, far away (the USA  :o) it was the preferred beer of beer snobs.  ???

I'll give you the kegs or cans, but I can't stand the bottled stuff.

I think it will be fine or lame depending on how it's done, but I don't really care.

James Bond does not drink beer:

Quote
'A dry martini,' he said. 'One. In a deep champagne goblet.'

'Oui, monsieur.'

'Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?'

'Certainly monsieur.' The barman seemed pleased with the idea.

'Gosh, that's certainly a drink,' said Leiter.

Bond laughed. 'When I'm...er...concentrating,' he explained, 'I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold, and very well-made. I hate small portions of anything, particularly when they taste bad. This drink's my own invention. I'm going to patent it when I think of a good name.'

Yeah, it's stupid and doesn't really fit. But, at least Heineken is actually beer. A martini made with anything but gin is just a mixed drink in a fancy glass.

I'm not debating the quality or otherwise of Heineken - to each their own. But James Bond is not an everyman - he enjoys the finest, rarest things in life. I should envy him the cars he drives, the clothes he wears, the women he bones, and yes, the drinks he drinks. I didn't mind too much the switch to Texas Hold 'Em because he played it in a ridiculously exclusive Mediterranean casino, not Felix's basement.

Whatever you think of the relative merits of Heineken as a beer, you cannot disagree that it is not rare, exclusive, or hard to come by. Watching Bond drink a Heineken will be like watching him fly coach or grab an off-the-rack at J.C. Penny or order Dominos in between assassinations and helicopter chases.

Just saying is all.
