...Whatever you think of the relative merits of Heineken as a beer, you cannot disagree that it is not rare, exclusive, or hard to come by. ...

That's certainly true.
However, remember that in many people's view (but not mine),  while its not particularly rare  Heineken is still very much perceived to be a 'high end' beer.   Maybe it made it into the character's hand as a paid product placement (likely), or maybe it was just written in because it is familiar and by and large still viewed as a premium product (possibly).
The public at large has no idea what something like Westy 12 represents (and really doesn't care).

Personally  I'd envision him sipping a Gale's Prize Old,  from a large wine glass. ;D

And I bet you picture him sipping it at the Old Bay Inn...

No, but my wife is from Linden/Cranford.  We used to enjoy fine beers at the Old Bay, back in the day.

Small world! It's a pretty good bet that  we probably bumped into each other at some point.  Between 1988 & 2005,  I don't think I ever missed a Friday happy hour or Saturday night blues event unless I was in a show or working out of town.

I still get there often enough.  And it's still a great place, too although the beer list is not as imaginative or exclusive as it once was and the blues acts were replaced by Dj's for a while (though they are starting to do some blues again).  Thankfully, they're still doing fairly well though, and as a result  never instituted either of the gimmicks that less successful restaurants use as a  "last gasp" (karaoke and standup comedy shows).

As a side note, to stay on topic, I will also now definitively confirm that I never saw James Bond there. But once I saw Elvis there drinking a Heineken (I guess it wasn't him).
