Yes, my back hurts but that's more to do with my weight than anything else so I'm going to hope that losing a bit of weight through running might actually help.  I can say from experience that losing a bunch of weight helped before (and then I gained it all back...).

in terms of weight loss. cutting back the calories in your diet makes way more of an impact than does exercise.  not that exercise isn't important, it just does not consume the amount of calories you think it will.  it takes about 3500 cal to drop a pound.  a brisk 30 minute workout might net you 350 over what you would burn brewing.  ten days of that to drop a pound.  or you could cut out a half of a meal....

stay off the treadmills.  i see way too many medial collateral ligament injuries on those damn things.

What's the reason for that?  I've been doing my running on the treadmill for now.  My thought was to get up to the point where I could do a decent amount of distance before I subject myself to public humiliation.

tschmidlin - How did you get roped into 4?  I thought that maybe if I survived the first one, I'd do another in October but I've gotta get through the first one.

except that calories from fiber don't count. \

dietary fiber by definition is not digetstible.  so there are no associated calories.  although some types of foods will help boost metablolism and some slow it down this is still calorie output.  fundamentally, if you weight more than you want too, it doesn't matter how much you exercise or what kind of food you eat. you are still eating too much for your given condition.

Oh, I agree 100%.  I put a post on page 4 that pertains to dieting.  I know I have to do it but I'm just dreading it because I've done it before and it's not fun.

in general, walking and on an incline they are not too bad, but remember that when you run on a treadmill, it runs back, i think it accelerates the foot more than what is anticipated and causes a little knee strain.  clearly it is not everybody, but most of my knee pains when they describe it along the edge of the knee cap , i will ask if they run on a treadmill - usually they say yes.  it is usually on the medial aspect but sometimes on the lateral.

going back to my earlier post (sorry for all of them but getting caught up) about the number of calories burned during exercise in terms of using exercise for weight loss - how many does your treadmill record over how long an exercise period.

also i am getting a fishing license this week.

^^^+1

i have more people with back issues in my office who are runners than i do home brewers. just saying.   8)
remember 5 k is 3 miles. you could walk that slowly in under about an hour.  take your time and practice walking with a good pair of shoes.  and for heaven's sake please stay off the treadmills.  i see way too many medial collateral ligament injuries on those damn things.

Boston marathon was yesterday, 26,716 registered participants. Looks like the AHA should be setting up recruiting booths to save these poor souls. ;)

Absolutely you can sustain injury from running. I certainly never meant to imply that. I have had back issues that crept up every so often during my longest stint of running - all muscular and totally treatable. If you think you will start any physical activity and not suffer some injury from it you are fooling yourself. I've also had shoulder problems in the past from weight training as well as back problems. But there's a huge difference between chronic injuries and temporary ones. And certainly any form of physical endurance exercise can cause a chronic injury particularly if not done properly. But to say "black and white" that running is bad for your joints is pure nonsense. I'm pretty darn happy with my physical state at 42 and I owe a good bit of that to years of running and weight training. I'm not going to hear that someone who is thirty pounds overweight is in better shape for living into their sixties and seventies and beyond because they've sat their asses in front of the TV every night.

i like the description of physical endurance exercise over the term cardio.  because that is what running, biking and swimming are for most people.  to really get the hear working requires huge metablolic demands.  you will get your "cardio" up higher running hard sprints than long slow distance.  similarly, try doing as many pushups as you can do for two minutes and then jump to two minutes of pull ups etc.  will be way more workload on the "cardio"  not saying choose one or the other. just like that description is all

I can eat 1000 calories a day in one sitting and gain weight if I don't exercise, I have done this. I can also eat 1000 calories a day broken up into 7 or 8 small meals, not excersize and lose weight. I have also done this. calories in is the same, calories out, at least as measured by activity level, is the same yet results differ.
If you say so, but the reality is that you've changed the "calories out" side of the equation.

I'm not sure exactly :)  It will be fine though, it's not that far and I can walk when needed.  I might be walking 4.5k :)

My goal is to do 30 mins of running whether I get to the end of the 5K or not.  I want to try to run the whole thing, regardless of how slowly.

That seems like a good goal.  With my usual walking pace I could do it in about 40 minutes, so shaving off 10 minutes might be doable.

If you are completing a 5K in 30 minutes that's a 10 min per mile clip, not speedy for sure, but not necessarily beginner either . Seems to be about the average race clip for most runners though.

yeah, I was wondering if you would catch that. It's true, I was manipulating my metabolism and thus changing the calories out side. I was more trying to point out that simply kCal_in - kCal_out makes it seem less complicated than it is. And that simply reducing kCal_in can have unintended side effects if nothing else changes in the system. I think I am a little touchy about this because I have friends with eating disorders that starve themeselves thinking that if they can just reduce kCal_in everything will work out.

The thing I liked about eating many times in the day is that even at the 1000-1500 kCal a day rate I was maintaining then I never felt hungry and could eat lots of different things so I didn't get bored. (I didn't drink back then either so that made it easier to keep the kCal_In low)
