How dark should pilsen lme be?
« on: April 22, 2012, 12:03:21 pm »
Haven't touched lme since Mr. Beer 10 years ago. I opened some pilsen lme today that came in a brewer's best kit and it was really dark. Is this normal?

It will be lighter when you dilute it with water, but the process does darken the color a bit.  The manufacturer should be able to give you a good ballpark of the final color.  I think that DME might give you a lighter color depending on the manufacturer.

I wonder why they don't put 'best used by' or 'born on' dates on these jars?

Seems pretty dark still but maybe I'm just not used to light colored beers yet.

Well, this is what it looks like in the carboy.  I can never tell how dark the final product will be, though. Seems pretty damned dark for a German pils.

Looks good. When the yeast settle out and you put it on a glass I'll bet it's a nice golden pils color for you. Cheers!

Yeah when I put it next to a Belgian blond I'm lagering its actually slightly lighter and I know the blond is a nice straw yellow. I guess seeing the dark lme had me worried ...  8)
