Managed to get a 1st with my Schwarzbier.  Other two didn't place.  Can anyone tell me the procedures for sending into the next round?  It's my first time.

Why not give people who judged last year the right of "first-refusal"? I.e. open entries a day early to those who judged the year previous.

Wouldn't that create more conflicts of interest? I could imagine a situation in which one of the first-round sites would have no one eligible to judge a popular category.

when the available entries are gone in 15 minutes, then there is a problem.

right now....there isn't.

If your life long goal is to win a medal (or ninkasi) then you will be there to sign up for it. ITS THAT SIMPLE.

stop b****ing

While this is a little more on the nose than I'd have phrased it, I agree with the sentiment.  Entries didn't fill until late in the weekend.  No one needed to take a day off of work to enter.  Anyone who wanted in within the first two days could have gotten in.  Anyone else wasn't paying particularly close attention, and I'm sure that they will next year if this is that important to them.

This is a big enterprise, and what seem like small changes can have serious, negative, and unintended consequences.  A judging center was added this year to raise the total number of entry slots, and I'm sure other changes will come down the pike as well - but let's not get too carried away with thinking that wholesale changes are "obviously necessary," as some around the internet are saying!

Exactly my point; thank you for stating it so succinctly. The NHC is a big deal; if people can't be bothered to click Refresh every few minutes, they aren't worth the AHA's time.

Exactly!!!! There are reportedly over 1 million homebrewers now, and only 10,000 spots taken up by maybe 5,000 of those homebrewers. So if you want to be part of the 1/2% then you'll get your priorities in order.

I got a 1st place and a 2nd place in two different categories at the Atlanta contest! Yahoo!  Another member of our club also got a 3rd place. This is my first time entering the NHC and have questions, is beer from the original brew required or can I brew a fresh batch and maybe tweak the recipe a little? All I have left is in Sam Adams bottles, is this allowed? Wow, this is cool!

My thanks to the AHA and all the forum members here and at Northern Brewer for all the great info they share.
Cheers, Mike.

Yes, you can rebrew and yes, S.A. bottles are OK.

Yes, you can rebrew and yes, S.A. bottles are OK.

Clarification: re-brew, but not "tweak the recipe".

To my knowledge, there is no rule that says a brewer cannot tweak their recipe.  And even if there was, there would be no way to assure it.  The real question would be: Do I have the ability to correct the faults identified in the first round and rebrew it with those corrections?  The fact that the brewer advanced their beer as it is, makes it a high hurdle to cross to make it better.

You know, it didn't even occur to me to check the rules. It just "seems wrong". It would give brewers who re-brew the advantage of incorporating first-round feedback; on the other hand, it's an option that's open to everyone, whether they take advantage or not. Tough call IMHO. :-\

It would only be an advantage if you can actually make it better. Seeing as though you already brewed a winning recipe, you may want to leave it alone.
