Blue Suede Shoes - Elvis

That song has kind of a sad story. The song was written by Carl Perkins, but hardly anyone remembers him. Perkins was in a bad car wreck shortly after recording the song, and was out of the music scene while Elvis was coming up. Elvis went on to be a much bigger deal than Perkins. But doing covers of other peoples' songs was standard back then.

Doc Pomus was another one of those songwriters who basically disappeared from memory, though the songs he wrote continue to be famous. He had polio when he was a kid so he had to use a wheelchair. He never finished his memoirs, but I read an excerpt and was really struck by it: "I was never one of those happy cripples who stumbled around smiling and shiny-eyed, trying to get the world to cluck its tongue and shake its head sadly in my direction. They’d never look at me and say, 'What a wonderful, courageous fellow.'”

Easy and Slow- Acousticats
“Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drank, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, “It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.
