The BEST thermometer in the World
« on: February 06, 2010, 09:47:18 AM »
My thermometer died again yesterday - the second within a month!
The cheapies that I'm buying here ('cause that's all that's available) seem to attract moisture into their electronics and become totally useless very quickly.
I am looking for the best thermometer available - simple, reliable, metric scale and with a lifespan of more than 14 days (or 6 brews - whichever comes first)
Any recommendations - include please a link to on-line purchase plus "how long" you have owned your particular model.
thanks
David

I bought one at Wal-Mart for 12$, and it has served me well for over a year now.

Buy an inexpensive bimetal dial thermometer.  The get a certified lab thermometer to keep it calibrated.

Here's an example of the inexpensive thermometer...it has a nut on the back for adjusting it...

And then something like this to calibrate the first one against...

Be sure to calibrate at mash temps, around 150F.

I've used this one for over 40 brew sessions. Obviously, it can't be left in the mash or anything, but it reads within a few seconds and I've found it to be accurate to much less than 1°C across the entire range. And of course the price is right.

I also have a cheap glass thermometer like this one that I use in the mash, but it sounds like you're looking for something digital.

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

Anyone have any success with using something like a roasting thermometer with a probe that goes into the mash?  I don't think the one I have is fully submersible.  It'd be nice to have something that sits outside the mashtun and tells you what the temp is inside without having to open it up.

That actually looks tastier than the octopus in the Ethic cooking thread.

Did you just run the probe into the mash?  Was it fairly accurate?

Probe right in the mash. It was off by a degree according to my trusty dial thermometer, so I kept this in mind when reading it. It really worked great. Don't know why I have not got anoher one. Might have o make a run to Walley's today.

Ah yes, the CDN Pro Accurate Quick Tip.  Came in first in America's Test Kitchen testing.  I have one I use for cooking but the probe is too short for my brewing purposes.
