Pabst Blue Ribbon
« on: June 04, 2012, 01:39:51 pm »
Appearance:  Pours out of the can with a nice white head that quickly dissipates.  Bright straw yellow color, well-carbonated, crystal clear.

Aroma: Grainy/straw, with very slight hoppy citrus/elderberry

Flavor:  Six row malt graininess married with light hops.  Very well balanced.

Mouthfeel:  Thin, dry and crisp.  Carbonation invites a restorative burp.

Overall impression:  The perfect summer beer.  Try one straight out of the can on a river float trip, paired with a jalapeno cheddar dog grilled with yellow mustard. Only suggestion for improvement:  Release a malt liquor stronger version in a 40 oz. bottle for sitting on the step outside the apartment.

Primo is brewed/owned by Pabst.  Tastes like s***, but you look cool when you have a Primo bottle in your hand!   ::)

I've been a fan of PBR since before the whole "trailer trash chic"/hipster movement grabbed a hold of it. I do appreciate that it has become more widely available in bars/clubs/restaurants, but I can't say that it exactly lives up to all the recent buzz around it. I definitely like it a hell of a lot better than most BMC fare, and it is always welcome in my fridge, but I'll take just about any craft lager/pilsner over PBR any day.

I believe miller/coors brews it, as well as all of "pabst" beers. Koolau and Maui lager were better.

Correct.  Pabst owns no breweries anymore, and contracts out the brewing of all the brands it owns, mostly to Miller/Coors.

Like many of the old school American beers, PBR was actually a pretty decent beer at one time and had a pretty good reputation and some character to back that up (their Bock beer was a favorite of mine  in my college days).

When the Pabst brewery in Newark, NJ closed,  a good friend of mine who worked there for many years moved on to a job at the nearby Anheuser Busch brewery.  His take on it: "I used to work in a brewery.  Now I work in a factory"

Old Style!

But it's not the same as it was in my youth.  We used to get six packs of tall boys at Walgreens for $3.00.  Those were the days.

we would get the old milwaukee in college. it was cheaper to buy warm, and at least 6 would be gone before it would get cold in our fridge.  but if you're going to let a little thing like warm beer bother ya, ... (rest unfit to publish) 8)

Amen brother. I have a standing offer of 4 bottles of Westy XII for 4 cases of Old Style, the only thing you have to pay for is the plane ticket to get out here.
