Those images really have a stark reality. Makes one glad that we are not in a fire area (at least in lower MI - there were  2 fires in the UP recently).

Here is a fire that happened in Kapoho Village - 9 miles from my home (Kapoho Village no longer exists.  It's burried under a 100' high cinder cone now):

To those of you who don't know Colorado Springs, this is not a small town. We have 350,000 residents, and 700,000 people in the county. This is one hell of a dangerous fire. They are saying on the TV that 20,000 homes are in direct danger right now.
And now the post office consolidation is like killing your post office....sheesh

Man, that is scary stuff.

The size of those homes is stunning.  The aerial views of torched cul-de-sacs are strangely fascinating.

Crazy times.  Living in the foothill pine zone has good views but is increasingly dangerous.

Very sad.

I hear it is half contained. :o

Latest report, as of an hour ago, 70% containment.  I'll be glad when I can go outside and not smell smoke.  There are 1500 firefighters here working tirelessly on this fire, and they have done an amazing job in the face of extremely adverse conditions. Without a doubt, they saved a huge portion of the city. They are the reason only 347 homes burned. My heartfelt thanks to all firefighters, no matter where you are.

I want to bring it home and snuggle with it until it feels better.

Well that certainly makes my little thousand acre blaze look like a camp fire. You're in my thoughts.
Quick update on the Pocatello fire....as of noon today, 66 homes and 29 structures gone.
The fire outside of our town had burned about 5000 acres by Sunday, but it is miles from any homes.
