Cleaning and sanitizing airstones
« on: June 12, 2012, 11:30:30 am »
What is the best way too clean and sanitize an airstone?  I got a cheapie blue aquarium bubbler that is 4" long.  Is it enough to leave it in sanitizer overnight?

I typically soak mine in StarSan for several minutes until the solution enters the tubing. Then force the StarSan out prior to aerating.  I'll boil the stone and the clamp every 4-5 sessions or so. No problems so far.

I also run mine in the star San for 30 seconds prior to aeration. Then again after without turning it off.  I figure that won't allow any nasty stuff to take hold.  But boiling it every few batches is a good idea.

I boil mine every two batches or so and store it in Starsan.

I boil mine for 10 minutes before each use; never had an issue.  Don't know if the blue aquarium store stones will stand up to that though.

When I checked my cheapie blue air stone, it was disintegrating.  So I never tried boiling it.  I bought a stainless steel one at my LBHS that I can also use to carbonate kegs.
