Muntons Caramalt/Maris Otter
« on: July 25, 2012, 04:20:46 pm »
Went into the LHBS today looking for a bag of Maris Otter and the guy working there pointed to a bag of Munton's Caramalt and said "right there, the caramalt."

But now I'm looking around and from what I'm reading this is NOT maris otter. Am I wrong or was he wrong? Do I need a refund?

It's possible he had a brain fart because I also picked up a few pounds of carapils too. But he rang it up as maris otter. I'll bring it back tomorrow. I don't think I need 55lbs of this stuff.

Technically, it *could* be Maris Otter. It just isn't Maris Otter pale malt.

Maris Otter is a barley variety.  But when anyone in a brewing context says "Maris Otter" without any other explanation, they specifically mean "pale ale malt made from Maris Otter."  That's implied.  So tell your LHBS guy you want base malt, not crystal malt.  Caramalt is a 10-15L crystal malt, kind of like a darker carapils.  Maris Otter (pale ale malt) is a 3-5L base malt.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll mention that when I return it today. A little alarm in my head was telling me "Steve, Cara-anything is not base malt" but I'm new to buying this stuff in bulk sooo....

If you have a whole bag of GP try a Timothy Taylor Landlord clone.

Unless your Total Wine is in England, you'll most likely not find it.
There is a thread on here about recipes for it with pretty good descriptions.
