On another note, the clutch in my truck started slipping last night.  One of the other perks of owning a manual transmission.     I really shouldn't complain after 11 years and 77K miles out of one clutch but it's hard not to mumble a bit.

Guess I got lucky.  My 1998 Honda Civic has 225K on the original clutch.

It mostly depends on who is driving.  77K is premature for a clutch to slip.

17 years, 234K, original clutch on Tacoma.  Hope I did not just jinxs meself.


What is the deal about diesels not being available in the US market?
I know a sweet little diesel Subaru I would love to have....alas not available in US.

Diesel emission standards in the USA being more stringent for some compounds IIRC. This requires more after treatment and control technology whichdrives up the price more, and we don't have the cheaper Diesel fuel to make the deal cost effective.

I learned how to drive a manual transmission when I was 16.  I drove a '49 Ford pickup removing construction debris from a subdivision construction site.  That truck had "three on the tree".

So did the first car I owned, a '62 Plymouth Valiant.  Those Valiants were famous for having automatic pushbutton transmissions on the dashboard, but mine was a three speed standard (three on the tree).  I had the Valiant one week (it was 11 years old when I bought it) and the throwout bearing started chattering, so I replaced the bearing, clutch and pressure plates.

We just bought a 2012 Sorento (4 cyl AWD) this spring.  Just under 9000 miles and we still enjoy it.  Even tho' its a bigger vehicle, we're getting better fuel economy than our 2007 Rondo that we traded in for it. 

This is our 3rd Kia and I wouldn't hesitate buying another - I still shop around with every car purchase, but they just deliver more features for less $.  Once you've had heated seats in a Canadian winter, there is no going back!  My only real issue is that (on the Rondo at least) I had to replace brakes and tires far quicker than expected, but that's no the first vehicle to have cheap factory installed brakes & tires.

Vehicle weight and what you use it hall around has a bit to do with it.  I've had light cars with clutches last 250k+.  My full size pickup/work horse gets a bit more beat up that my old Corolla.  Teaching kids to use a clutch doesn't really help either.  (For the record, second set of tires and one set of brakes.  She's just a baby yet.)

The good thing is it is only slipping under heavy stress.  Driving to my desk job doesn't cause that much anymore so it will last awhile yet.
