temperature contolling during fermentation
« on: October 18, 2012, 11:02:39 am »
I'm looking into purchasing equipment so that I can temperature control my fermentation. I have a standard 6 gallon glass carboy with triple lock air lock that I use as a primary and I was wondering what size chest freezer would fit this carboy? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Tim

Any chest freezer should fit at least one. However, I can fit two 7.9 gallon buckets (no ferm locks) in a 7cu chest freezer with no problems on a platform. I think you'll have to go larger than that to fit 2 carboys without modification such as a wooden collar.

I have a 5 cu ft that fits my 6 gallon better bottle with airlock fine.  In hindsight, I wish I had gone bigger so I could do multiple batches at a time with similar fermentation temps.

I may still go bigger and make the 5 cu ft one a lagering fridge someday in the future.

I think mine is 19 cu ft but it holds 4 carboys.  Great for lagers.

I switched to a blow off tube for everything so I didn't have to worry about a collar.

I use a 15 cu ft. 3 buckets / carboys plus a fourth on the hump (no airlock on that one)
