Thermometer?
« on: December 28, 2012, 06:54:16 pm »
What is the best thermometer to use? I have a floating thermometer but I need to upgrade to something more accurate / instant.

Thanks.

I love my Thermapen
http://www.thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/

It's pricey, but I wish I'd spring for it years ago.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

+1 on the Thermapen.  There are cheaper options available that are very accurate.  But none that I've found so far that match the Thermapen in terms of speed.  Plus it's great for a variety of cooking applications as well.

Thanks for the reply. I just bought one from Amazon :-)

Just curious, but what makes you think your thermometer isn't accurate?

I like the infrared thermometers a lot.  We use them every day at my work.  The best part is you don't have to contact the beer with a probe.

The infrared ones aren't all that accurate for mash temps since they're just reading the surface temperature.  And at that point it doesn't matter if there's a probe in contact with the wort.

Right, I was making the distinction for beer, and assuming (maybe incorrectly) he wanted to monitor fermentation temp.  I recirculate, so monitoring the outflow of the mash with the infrared is quite accurate.  No single thermometer in a single place is accurate for a static column of mash.

+1 on the Thermopen... I use one for grilling/cooking...

For brewing purposes I have been using the pocket thermometers http://www.thermoworks.com/products/low_cost/rt301wa.html  .  I just got an email this morning that they are on-sale until Jan.3rd so I picked up a couple extra just to have on hand.
