Just Kinda Happened
« on: February 10, 2013, 02:02:50 PM »
I wanted to clear out some leftovers so I pieced together a brew today.  Here's what happened:
12# 2-Row
1# Crystal 20
.5# Light Munich
.5# Wheat Malt
.25# Biscuit Malt
Mashed at 152F for 60 mins.
2.2 oz US Tettnanger at 60 mins
3 oz Fuggles at 15 mins
3.8 oz Fuggles at 1 min and steep for 30 mins.
1056 slurry to be pitched (still steeping while I have a Chimay clone)

What have I done?  I've never made a Tett/Fuggle IPA before!  Any predictions?  ???

That's why I had so much sitting around and why I'm a little worried!  I use Fuggles in my Stout and ESB but that's about it.....

Now the twist is I have about 1.5oz of Amarillo left which I'm toying around with using to dry hop.  That combo can not have been brewed yet:  Tettnanger/Fuggle/Amarillo!   Ha! ::)

And Denny, you would be proud.  Batch sparge #2 and I may be leaning away from my homemade sparge arm.  It was really nice to sparge indoors when it's 20F outside!

Batch sparging is so wonderfully easy. 83% every time on a double batch sparge.

What do you get with only one sparge?  I get 83-85% with one.

Shipyard IPA is a tasty English IPA brewed with Fuggles that I enjoy quite a bit. Unless you are a confirmed Fugglephobe, I think you're going to like the results here.

That's good info.  I am not a Fugglephobe, just never used them in an IPA before so I had no idea what I was getting in to.  Would you now advise not to dry hop it?  I did a 3.8oz hopstand for 30 mins with Fuggles.  It sounds like I should let them shine at this point....

I've never dry-hopped with them myself. My gut says skip the dry hops, unless you have a few ounces of EKG's laying around.
