Yeast starter or additional yeast packs

Brew a German pils using Wyeast 2308 Munich Lager.
Can I use (2) packs of yeast and not do a starter?

Yes, but for a lager, it's most likely going to take more than two packs. Check out www.mrmalty.com for the proper pitch rate based on volume, gravity, age of the yeast, etc.

Mr. Malty says 381 billion cells, if your og is 1.050; you would use 3.8 vial/packs to ferment.

How much DME
How much Water

You can still use 1 pack and then step it up.

Visit www.yeastcalc.com, enter in the same info and it will tell you how many steps.

Ideally you weigh out the DME at a 10:1 ratio so 1L=100grams, 2L=200grams, etc....

Look at the yeast articles section of MrMalty.com.  Jamil has written an excellent article on how to make a yeast starter, including calculating the right amounts of water and DME.  Do yourself a favor and buy a stirplate and 2000 ml Erlenmeyer flask (maybe for next time).  It is definitely a worthwhile investment, because it speeds up making yeast starters to a workable timeframe, and improves the chances of a ending up with a problem free starter, with a substantially larger population of healthy yeast than can be had with a non-stirplate starter.

Yes, keep Mrmalty.com and yeastcalc.com in your favorites.  Mr Malty has info around re-pitching slurry and yeastcalc has better info around stepping up.  Both use the same formula for general starter making.
