Handle on 20 LB CO2
« on: May 10, 2013, 07:19:34 AM »
Ok...dumb Friday question.

I'm looking to get a bigger co2 tank and I'm thinking of the 20 lb (mostly because I can get it filled locally for $15).  These bigger tanks have a handle on them, and every promotional shot online makes it look like the regulator will have trouble connecting because the handle is in the way.

Anyone that has one of these tanks, do the handles spin so you can connect most regulators to it?

I told you...dumb question but my mind is already in the weekend  ;D

I got one and the handle spins and does not restrict the regulator, its a little tight inbetween but no restriction to the regulator.

That's what I wanted to hear...thanks.

I'm amazed that I can fill the 20 lb tank for less than what I can exchange one 5 lb tank.  I figured out that each time I fill the 20 lb, it would be a savings of about $49 over 4 exchanges.  Since I'm planning to move the tank outside the kegerator anyways (and free up space for 1 more keg), it seems like a no brainer.

That is a great price. I pay $50.00 to fill my 20 lb. tank.

Are you on an island or something? There's no way it should cost more than maybe $30 anywhere in the lower 48.

At any rate, yes, the handles rotate so that they'll clear the regulator. Getting the regulator on and off can be a PITA since you can't spin a wrench very far, but it's no big deal. Beats not having a handle for sure.
Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

I was wondering the same thing - I swap my 20 lb tank for under $20.

I have too many tanks so I don't go too often.  The last couple times I went, I had to get tanks recertified so it was around $40 for the fill and recert.  The fill itself was only $20+/- a couple dollars.

Maybe $50 includes recert?

My last 20# fill included the hydro-test for about $56.  The fill was 20-ish.  The fill before that was $17 so it has gone up a bit.

Airgas here only does swaps, so hydro is not a problem.  $18 for 5# fill, $22 for a 20#

In Carlsbad here are the prices:
1 lb $6
5 lb $10
20 lb $12
50 lb $20
All the cost is really the service charge, the gas is really cheap.  Plus they exchange the tank so I've never had to pay for a hydrotest.
I'd really just rather be brewing in sunny Carlsbad New Mexico

Regulators are pretty standard shapes and every tank needs one, so I can't imagine a tank would be sold that couldn't work with one.

The only reason I asked is because one site I saw actually said "may not work with all regulators because of the handle".

It looks like it's not going to be a problem though.

Thanks.

I think it's about $24 for a 20lb tank swap. I use Matheson Gas here and they never charge for the hydro test if it is out of date, but I now exchange only and not have my personal tanks filled. It may be different and I know in some places you are at the mercy of the provider. I found that fills on-site were the biggest ripoff.
