Black Malt versus Roasted Barley

What difference will they have on a beer getting 3oz for color?

probably not much difference at all. The black malt may add a little more color.

Roasted Barley will give you a lighter head. It may be a little redder than the Black Patent as well.

One thing I learned from a talk on malt at the NHC,is that the roasted malts color will have a range depending on the maltster. Fine the Lovibond for the malt you buy, don't just use a generic value.
