A Good Day to Die Hard movie review
« on: July 06, 2013, 01:23:33 pm »
I redboxed this movie last weekend. I own the first 4. The critics weren't kind to this movie. They said the dialogue was, well, stupid. And they were right. But this movie really lit up my big plasma TV and put my surround sound through it's paces. And that is what I buy an action movie for. If the dialogue gets to ridiculous I will pop open a higher ABV beer. If I want intelligent thought provoking dialogue I will turn on the discovery channel.

Gymrat great review. Been looking forward to seeing that movie for a while, love the franchise. I am always amazed when people try to over think action movies.

First Die Hard is one of the all time great action movies. Rest of them just ruin the first a little. That's why I stopped watching after 2nd one.

I like all of them except the 2nd one equally. But then I just like a lot of action. I don't care much about the story lines. Some of my favorite action movies are
Safe House
A Team (for a good action comedy)
Red
the first Expendables movie...I just love that street sweeper shotgun
Daniel Craig James Bond...all 3
Terminator movies
Basically just entertainment that lights up my plasma. I get enough reality in life itself. When I sit down to watch a movie it is a form of escapism for me.
When the price of A Good Day to Die Hard drops it will be added to my collection.

Well, I have to disagree. Die Hard was a truly incredible movie that broke a lot of new ground. It's a movie that takes place in one evening about a smart (but bewildered) cop who literally gets caught without his shoes. There aren't many action movies willing to limit their focus like that an more. All these action movies are trying to be bigger, louder and more impossible than the previous. But none of them ever try to be smarter. Which is stupid. IMO anyway.

Interesting bit of Trivia. Did you know that "Die Hard" was actually a sequel to a movie called "The Detective" and the original John McLain was Frank Sinatra? And that under contractual obligations the role had to be offered to him first but, being in his 60s at the time, he turned it down.

No I didn't know that. I used to like his movies and Dean Martin's Matt Helm movies when I was a kid.

Absolutely agree 100%. Almost every action movie for the next 10 yrs after it was billed as "Die Hard on a...Die Hard in a...Die Hard with a..."

It may not have created the action movie genre, but it defined it. Just as Terminator defined relentlessness, and Lethal Weapon defined the buddy flick.

So Die Hard defined the "action-movie"? I'm leaning towards ultimate wrong place wrong time situation.

"Die Hard" was the ultimate no-brainer-guy movie.  No plot.  Cardboard characters, stereotyped good vs. evil.  But lots of stuff got blown up real good.  It delivered what it was supposed to.
