Anybody use a false bottom in the boil kettle?
« on: July 26, 2013, 12:28:27 pm »
I have a false bottom for my kettle. I was wondering about using it throuchout the boil, then when i pump out it would be in place as a hop back. Would this cause any problems with the boil?

If the holes get plugged it can cause problems with circulation and therefor scorching or possibly an huge eruption of boiling wort.

but other than that... should be fine

I have used false bottom in kettle for about 13 years.  It never clogged or scorched, but keeps hop cones and some hot break (cones providing the filter) out of fermenter.

I built my electric keggle with a false bottom about 23 years ago...no problems with the setup whatsoever.  Works like a charm.

Another option that worked for me with whole hops is a stainless braid ala denny conn style batch sparge (water return line.) I did have it clog once on a massive DIPA, but aside from that it always worked well.

Mine has a false bottom. Works really well with whole cone, which will act as a filter bed during the chilling recirculating phase. A large amount of pellets can clog the holes when pumping out, but a SS spoon can be used to scrape them off.

There is a large % of the whole hops that end up in the center of the immersion chiller.
