The author of that article might be shocked to find that the following can be used under the Reinheitsgebot to make "pure" beers.

Slaked lime to remove alkalinity.
PVPP. A plastic to clarify.
Isinglass to clarify, if the beer is filtered (From Kai's page).

If it can be proved the material is not in the finished beer, it can be used.

Fears of GMO and HFCS are over hyped IMO.

Went back and reread the article. The author claims Guinness uses HFCS but what is his source? As far as that goes, Pepsi is made by martians. It's true, you read it here. folks.

And isinglass is made from SWIM bladders, they contain air to regulate buoyancy and have nothing to do with waste. As far as trying to generate alarm goes, i think that's a big distinction.

And why would guinness use simple sugars? To lighten the body of their 3% beer?

The author makes a lot assumptions and alters information. A number of these things are used by your local craft breweries (and homebrewers). This person obviously doesn't understand brewing and is just trying to create a controversy.

Yeah, what they said. Oh, and the author has some problems with basic grammar, too. It's hard to read something that is supposed to inform when the writer is obviously an idio.. er uh, uninformed.

Wouldn't raspberries be easier to pluck, and more readily available than beaver anuses? Thereby being cheaper? And, has anybody ever seen a beaver running around without a bung hole?

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

Here's the original blog post, which is just reposted in the link Carl has. She quotes an email from Guinness in the comments that says they use HFCS. I still don't believe it, as it doesn't make any sense to add it to the stout.

My gut hurts from laughing.  That's easily the most bizarre, disturbing beer story of all time.  Just the same, I think I might settle for the second best raspberry flavor, ie., raspberries.

Well, she seems to have got this much right "With cheap beer – you are not just getting a cheap buzz, you are getting the worst of the worst." Ok.

After that, it just seems to be a mindless rant. Isinglass has been around how long? It and gelatin are pretty natural ingredients, I would think. The beaver anus doesn't make much sense to me. I remember years and years ago Wendy's fighting off some story that they used earth worms in their burger versus the 100% beef they claimed. Turned out earthworms are incredibly expensive compared to beef; so, it just doesn't make sense. Now, I don't claim to know the going rate for a beaver anus, but I'll bet actual berries are cheaper.

The author wasn't very thorough.  They completely missed the largest  and most dangerous ingredient in beer.  That is, dihydrogen-oxide.  That stuff kills lots of people every year.   ;D

Paul

Not to mention that hydrogen hydroxide is the major component in ALL beers!  Oh the humanity!

Yes, but it is ORGANIC feces!

And include me in with the who gives a sh!te about GMO and HFCS heretics.
