My gas fired RIMS flat rack system....
« on: October 30, 2013, 09:30:31 am »
My first automated 1/2 barrel system. Propane powered BG14's for the HLT and boil, BG10 for the RIMS burner. Adjustable high pressure regulator with a frame fuel rail. Pilot safety via 3 gas fireplace manual pilot controls. Asco valves fired by Allen Bradley DIN rail relays and PID controllers. Automated mash tun level control with a capacitive proximity sensor. Marsh 815 pumps. Drop-in whirlpool tube. 30 plate heat exchanger feeds direct to primary fermenter with aerator nozzle. Boil controller doubles as the chilled wort temp read out. On system filtered water supply and drain connectors. Way nicer than lugging buckets of water around and boiling chiller coils.  Shown with the 8 gallon pots and connections set for fly sparging. It took me about 6 months to finish the system. (no big hurry, the gravity system seen in the background was still making good beer)

What, no automated spent-grain extraction to cattle-feed bin system? Slacker!

Seriously, congrats! your system sets the bar very high. Excellent vision and execution.

Bumping this as I'm curious what a setup like this costs, ballpark?

My setup cost about $8K, so I'd figure around that...

Since I did as much of the fabrication that I could myself it certainly lowered the overall cost. I think I'm right around $5K give or take a bit in actual costs. That does not take into consideration the stuff I bought thinking I could make work on the system. Lessons learned are sometimes expensive even with the help of being able to research previous experience in forums like this one.

So we've finished our 15 gallon tuns.... not only can we now do 2 cornies at a time but we have the room for those big grain bills in the 5 gallon mode. Here we are just boiling a 5 gallon recipe of our Imperial Rum Stout which has a 20 lb grain bill.   A crowd favorite at last year's AHA Big Brew in Grand Rapids, MI. We won't run out so soon this year.  May 3rd at Calder Plaza this year... be there if you can!

Nice rig! Great job! As I get older, I'm thinking of selling my 3-tier setups and moving to one level breweries with pumps to do all of the work. Either that or I need to start using my home gym more ....we'll see!   :D
