Agree with Drew...I also think most of your time will be spent on subcoms, including but not limited to drafting emails, responding to assorted questions/issues, and following email trails on various topics. One week will be somewhat busy and the next week very slow. It's not extremely demanding, but keeps you on your toes at times.

It's a committment, but also has it's rewards. I enjoy it for the most part. It's a labor of love. :)

Every time I look at this forum, it makes me glad I ran for GC.  It's concrete evidence that I was able to make a difference.  Anybody who runs for GC has a chance to make a difference for homebrewers.

Does being on the GC preclude you from entering the NHC?

The only people I see in the rules that aren't allowed to enter are employees of the BA which I'm guessing the GC members aren't considered employees.

Jake is correct here.  Although, it does preclude you from entering contest the AHA runs, like the Siebel scholarship.

Does being on the GC preclude you from entering the NHC?
Does it guarantee you a spot at NHC (not entering the comp but attending)?

Yes.  You are required to attend NHC since that's where we have a big yearly meeting.  You get to spend 5 hours on Wed. in a meeting.

A meeting that starts WAY to early in the morning - not to dissuade anyone. ;)

mmmm, nothing like a 5 hour morning meeting to get the blood pumping.

come to think of it, there isn't much better than a 5 hour morning meeting to get you ready to start drinking in the very early evening.

The drinking starts at the meeting.  How else do you think they get us to show up?  :)

now you see, all those IBM user group conferences would have been soooo much more interesting if they had served beer DURING the meetings!

Actually, ever since Curt Stock termed out of the GC, we've been shockingly tee-totallie during the meeting. Curt used to be the wise-ass who'd crack open a bottle of mead at 10:15 during one of the first breaks. :)

The first GC meeting I went to was in Orlando.  Gordon had just returned from Belgium and brought along a cooler full of goodies.  I don't recall much else about the meeting.
