What Commercial Beers Do You Have Aging?
« on: November 16, 2013, 09:38:15 pm »
I love this time of year when breweries release some great beers to age.  Last year I started buying and aging some commercial beers.  Here's what I've got aging so far:

Avery Czar 2012 and 2013
Firestone Walker Anniversary XVI and XVII
Dry Dock Bligh's Barley Wine 2012
Deschutes Abyss 2012
Stone's 2012 Vertical Epic
Great Divide 2012 Barrel Aged Hibernation
Great Divide 2012 Hibernation
Odell 2013 Woodcut 7 RIS

I'm attempting to get a series of some beers through 5 years and do some verticals at the house w/ some friends.  So what does everyone else have aging?  Any beers that you aged that were just awesome after a year or two?

I've got an abyss I misremember which year. **EDIT TO ADD ** 2011

Then I've got the 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 bigfoot. I've been planning a vertical tasting for my birthday so Hopefully I will get to that this year when I add the 2014.

That sounds awesome!  When does SN normally release Big Foot?

IIRC, mid January.

I probably have 10 years of Bigfoot in the basement. Only one 03 left.

I haven't seen Bourbon County Stout here in Denver, but I hear rumors that it may show up this year!

I've got North Coast Old Stock Ale from about 2003 to last year.  There are a couple other things in there, too.

If you get the chance to pick some up, you'll be glad you did. I've tried a lot of the bourbon barrel aged stouts and it's the best of the bunch right after release IMO, and then ages very well of course.  Which is ironic, because it's among the most bourbon forward. It is insanely good.

Definitely sounds like we are finally going to get some BCS here.  I'm hearing "Black Friday."  If it's true, then I'll definitely be looking for it!

My favorite commercial beer for aging is St Bernardus 12.  A friend asked me about beer aging so I shared a 750ml bottle that was at least 5 years old (I'm not sure of the year, but it still had a $6.99 price tag on it) and we compared it to a fresh one.  While the fresh bottle was nice, the aged one was truly spectacular.

I'm gonna pour 8 years of Big Foot for a side by side tasting. comparative tasting to see what age does to a beer.

LOL

Technically, a Vertical tasting is where you taste many different batches of the same beer.  Ideally at least a year apart.  And as you can see from the list, it's all about the differences in aging.  I have at least 6 bombers of Pike Brewings' Barley Wine from 2006 forward, only problem there is they use a different recipe each year.  But, we still enjoy our yearly tasting......

That's when you taste different years of the same beer side by side.
