I'll accept the yank comment. Though I'm not sure what side Washington fought for, blue or gray. We're still fighting an east/west war here.

We do know something about food though. I'll take elk backstrap and Dungeness crab over swimp n grits any day.

Alternate answer:  They didn't become a state until 1889.  From what I understand Washington Territory had no skin in the conflict, but was part of the Union.  Oregon on the other hand, did have volunteers in the Civil War on the Union side.
