Just bottled some Brown Porter for the coming fall. The sample tasted wonderfully rich: coffee, chocolate, and a licorice-like flavor (from the brown malt, I think), along with lighter, minty notes from Northern Brewer hops and an initial fruit taste from the Burton yeast. Can you tell I'm eager for the next couple of weeks to pass quickly?

A cool and rainy Labor Day here seemed like a good time to start the fall brewing schedule. Yesterday, I brewed a dubbel.

OG 1.072, 10 gallons

16.75 lbs. Avangard pils (last of a sack)
4 lbs. Avangard munich
4 lbs. Chateau Abbey malt

Mash-in at 145°F for 90 mins. Lauter, then batch sparge to raise to 158°F. Rest for 20 min, then lauter again.

2 oz. Hallertau Mittelfruh FWH
1.5 oz. Challenger 60 min
2 oz. Styrian Goldings 30 min
2 lbs. D-90 Belgian candi syrup 10 min
1.5 lbs. D-180 Belgian candi syrup 10 min
1 lb. plain sugar 10 min
1 package glazed figs 10 min
0.4 oz. bitter orange peel 10 min

Split between re-activated yeast slurries of WY3787 Trappist and WY3522 Ardennes.

That's a very tasty looking recipe.

Yep.  When I saw them in the World Market store, I thought they needed to go into a dubbel.

Didn't brew this weekend. Did bottle some of my Marzen to send to a comp tomorrow. Hoping to brew an apricot ale for my wife in the next couple weeks and an APA soon.

Kegged up my Helles Export with brewtan yesterday. First time using it, so looking forward to carbing it up.

Trying out a Grainfather for the first time today.  I'm making the same pale ale recipe I made in my cooler a couple weeks ago so I can compare them.

Brewed an 'imperial kolsch' and ended up a few points low on the OG which was disappointing. My efficiency headaches continue as it unpredictably goes up or down 10 points with every batch...

Pitched onto 3 week old slurry of G03 and am excited to see how it turns out. Used 1/2# sugar and mashed at 148F for 90 minutes in attempt to get it to finish relatively low. Hoping it will end up around 7.5% ABV.

Do you mill your own grain, out of curiosity?

Good call. I do have an old corona mill with drill adapter but stopped using it because my drill would lose charge before getting through. My LHBS is very good with only one mill so I guess I just assumed they keep it properly set. I kind of got lazy and ignorant so I will have to revisit it.

I was being a bit dramatic regarding consistently seeing 10 point shifts however my efficiency is definitely inconsistent...

Cordless drills aren't designed for the kind of continuous duty that grinding grain requires, most don't have the battery capacity and such use dramatically shortens the service life of the batteries. Fifty bucks will buy you an adequate, new, corded drill. If you decide to go that route something with a max RPM in the 500 to 700 range is preferable to the drill/drivers which usually are around 1,500 to 2,000 RPM.
Sorry if I'm too far off subject here.
