Brewed Pils this morning (no surprise there, it's my thing.) But what a great brew day!  First batch using Brewtan B, don't know what else it will do, but it did seem to help lautering efficiency.   Dialing in my low intensity boil, got evap rate down to just 5% in 45 min.  And the big one was that this was my first brew in years using just refractometer,  no messing with hydrometer or iodine. Really streamlined everything.  Thanks to everyone on various threads for giving me ideas to improve things.  Now if I, a former elaborate step masher,  can just encourage others to simplify their mash....

Its been awhile since I have posted.  Been homebrewing/experimenting with what little spare time I have.

Just working in a midweek brewday. Irish Red ale up next in the brew log, following with a weissbier and an English IPA for a competition.

It's brewing weekend for me! Tomorrow is kegging, cleaning and prep. Looking forward to purging by pushing sanitizer, and not lifting my fermenters but racking with CO2! Woo hoo! But I'm not prospecting for the LODO gang... I'm doing it for personal reasons.

Day after tomorrow is brew day. I really want to retry the Double Mash and brew an American Barleywine, but my sessionable crushable pipeline is low. So I'm doing a pale ale and a lower roast stout with Tim Taylor yeast. First time with that weirdo yeast, should be fun.

Jim, gonna try the low intensity boil thing? My boil this weekend was just <45 min, lid on, simmer, ~5% reduction.  I'd like to get to 4%, I'm really sold on this since Martin brought it to attention!  For the pale, at least, don't know about the stout.

Yes. It will be totally by eye balls. I adjusted my recipe to shoot for 1 gallon boil off instead of 1.5. Bringing to 211, backing off to shimmer simmer covered for 40 min, then uncover and roll for 20.

Brewtan B in mash and 15 min boil. 5g each.

Cool!  (I didn't even crank the heat much in my open 15 min this time.)  Look forward to your assessment.

EDIT  I should clarify, 45 min was 30 lid on, 15 open. And BTB mash and boil!

Interested in what grains you use for your blended base and to learn what you like about 085 compared to other choices, such as the Irish Ale yeast. I hope to brew an Irish Red this spring and every year I tweak things.  I use the Irish Ale malt for the base and last year used Bramling Cross as part of the hop mix--enjoyed it very much but always looking for other ideas.

G.P./M.O. blended base - I usually go for Malting Co Ireland's Irish Ale malt and G.P. and substituted the M.O.
I set out for Irish Ale yeast, LHBS didn't have any.  The Blend was not my 1st choice or my 3rd, it was just a debated idea... funny enough the starter never took off so I drove to another LHBS for Irish ale

brewing on sunday, going back to an ipa recipe more reminiscent of my early days of brewing.

1.065/65ibus

62% 2 row
30% Maris otter
5% C60L
3% Carafoam

Apollo for bittering
Simcoe/Amarillo/Ekuanot at 10 and whirlpool
Simcoe/Amarillo 3:1 for dryhop
Chico yeast

EDIT  I should clarify, 45 min was 30 lid on, 15 open. And BTB mash and boil!
1st batch. Hit expected numbers using corrected refractometer all the way through. I decided to go 45min covered simmer, which I let it hit hot break first, then dialed down. At 15 I added my Brewtan B, I changed that to 2.5g when I saw how much 5g was. 2.5g looks about half tsp plus. Anyway, BrewtanB and no lid rolling boil at 15, wirlfloc, nutrients at 10, hops at 5.

I came pretty close on volume boil off estimate. Was shooting for 6gal in the fermentor and got 6.25. O.P. Was dead on so my efficiency was a couple %higher than normal. Probably new improved false bottom.

The finished wort was slightly darker than starting boil but barely. Didn't smell any DMS, but it's 99% golden promise.

Back to work... 2nd batch just past hit break

Just curious, what lager yeasts do you like to keep going? (Me, I'm all 34/70.)

So 830 is my 34/70 (chosen for performance) and 833 I believe is Ayinger?   Had a soft spot for them since a village Bierfest I encountered summer of '85.  Nice choices.
