Dilution for Alkaline/Caustic Soultion?
« on: January 26, 2014, 07:52:27 am »
I have a HERMs type system and was given some Shepard brothers shear 250- A heavy duty Alkaline cleaner. I would like to use it to clean my system instead of PBW. I want to use it safely and have no clue on the dilution ratio or how to use safely for my all SS system. Also, would it be ok to run through my copper counter flow chiller and pumps?

I'm not sure what dilution ratio you would need or wether it would be harmful with your copper chiller. My guess is it would slowly eat away your copper chiller. Be aware that most caustic cleaners work better with an oxidative agent. Contact the company and ask them.

I will say that once I took my homebrew CFC (Chillzilla) and ran it through a caustic solution (Lerapur 283 and Lera O mixture) and was pretty disgusted about how much black gunk came out of that thing that oxiclean didn't get. This should be something I add into my next diatribe about why the IC is so much better than a CFC or plate chiller. ;)
