"Permanently Wet" Coating for containers
« on: January 23, 2014, 01:12:15 pm »
This popped into my YouTube recommendations. This company created a coating that makes surfaces "permanently wet". They have videos of all sort of containers with various viscous liquids inside. Pint glasses and ketchup bottle below. Doesn't look like it does much to aid head retention, but it could be good for filling pitchers and malt extract or syrup containers. Maybe coat the inside of a kettle to minimize boil overs?

yeah looks like a terrible idea for a pint glass.  I guess it's uses in other things such as the boil kettle would depend on if the stuff came off... like at all.  If it was truly perm on the kettle and could handle the heat it seems like it would help prevent boil overs...  Maybe useful for a growler as well... again assuming nothing 'comes off'... I'm not sure I would ever use such 'stuff' as It just seems like maybe I'm not drinking 100% beer anymore...

I could see this being very useful for handling honey when making mead.  I usually dip a ladle into the bucket of honey and it is hard to minimize the drips, but if the ladle was coated with this, I would think it would make it considerably easier.

I think in applications that don't involve high heat/boiling that there is some (possible) merit there. But not in a boiling kettle for me. Too many inherent risks from components of the compound ending up in a pint glass. The malt syrup idea of making it easy to pour seems solid.

Would probably work awesome in a blowoff tube so all the yeast and crud doesnt get stuck in it.

Or fermenters to keep the crud from sticking?  I think Spoetzel uses something on its kegs.  They clean up nice!

I thought of another 'real' use for this... The cone of a conical fermenter to prevent yeast from sticking and more easily direct it to the dump valve.
