Found good buy on bulk malt storage bin at Costco
« on: February 19, 2014, 05:26:48 pm »
Not sure if these are available nationwide - I purchased today here in Spokane Valley, WA, in the pet food section.  They are rated to hold up to 54 lbs of dry pet food, measure 14.8" x 18" x 23.8", 69 qt / 17.25 gal, and come with castors (optional to put them on) and a heavy duty plastic scoop.

As you can see, it easily holds a 55 lb full bag of malt, and is of decent but not super heavy duty clear plastic -- appears to be strong enough to fill with malt, although I plan to stick pretty close to the rated weight.  The seal grommet is not rubber, rather appears to be small cell weather stripping, but matches well and covers the rim.  It is very lightweight and I think the castors work well enough when fully loaded, especially on a smooth floor.  Very competitively priced here.  I paid $15.79 + sales tax.  And made in USA.  I'm going to get one or two more tomorrow - beats lifting Rubbermaid tubs, and seal is considerably better, although not stackable like Rubbermaid tubs.

Looks nice - what was the cost?

I use 4 large Vittles vaults with gamma seal spin on lids for my Pilsner, 2Row, and MO..the fourth is a bin that is holding bags of miscellaneous crystals, munichs, Vienna, wheat, rye and other specialty malts.

I love any easy to use container and the rollers make it really good to use.  Nice choice!

Here they are only $15.79 at Costco.  Less than 1/2 what they cost on Amazon.

I really like these lids: http://www.amazon.com/Gamma-Seal-Lid-Variety-Pack/dp/B007F0HVXW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1392922590&sr=8-3&keywords=gamma+lids

They fit on a standard 5 gallon bucket. Two buckets holds a full bag. When empty - you've got a bucket that you can use.

I've had rats chew through several plastic grain storage bins (in my shed). Nothing but metal trash cans for me!

That would make me a convert to metal, as well as a rodent trapper!  But no problems for me - my wife has a cat!

I went and bought three more of the Costco ones yesterday.  In the process of moving full bags into them, and reviewing the overall status of various grains in various plastic tubs with lids in my basement, I found a live GRUB or other LARVAE in the bottom of one of my tubs!  I definitely don't want to be making any mealworm milk stout, so "lock and lid" as they say in the folksong army!  If I see any large rodents, minus a cat I'll probably have to resort to going after it with an old mash paddle, or maybe trap it using some Belgian cheese and Dark Strong for bait.

This was an opportune time to get these since I have taken in a larger stock than usual because a friend who was on the supply side and had good prices is going out of business so I bought 5 sacks of malt while I still can.

On deck:
Summit Amarillo Citra IPA
Denny's BVIP (Splitting 10 gallons with a friend I am teaching how to AG brew)
