Bottles with logos for NHC comp?
« on: March 04, 2014, 03:41:40 pm »
I apologize if this has been addressed but I just poured a glass of a munich dunkel that I brewed in December that I was convinced was totally FUBAR. WOW was I wrong, it's arrived! :D. I want to enter this into the NHC but I bottled them all in repurposed Sam Adams bottles. I read that raised letters on bottles is acceptable, does this include commercial bottles? Thanks for any help!

Yes, that specifically means commercial bottles like Sam Adams.

LOL. Somehow I'm hoping this is the Brewers version of 'Break a leg".

You may be barred from NHC, but in my experience, Sam Adams bottles are not rejected from other homebrew competitions because they are so ubiquitous.

NHC rules specifically say that raised lettering is OK.

In my opinion that rule needs to disappear from all competitions, as it's long outlived it's intent. When there weren't many homebrewers, it was possible that the anonymity of competition entries might be lost, "because everyone knows Rob uses Bass bottles." That just doesn't apply anymore.
Please read her profile, and reelect my wife to the Governing Committee: Roxanne Westendorf

I named my brewery after my cat, Moose. He's Siamese.

I just put my labels on my entries last night and all my info was on the label.  Do the judges see this information?  If so, I guess labels or identifying marks on the bottles doesn't really matter.

I always send comp entries in new bottles, but do use SA bottles for my personal use.

During the cellaring phase, the cellarman(woman) apply numbered labels to the cap and bottle. The entry label is not given to the judges.

Actually, for NHC that bottle label is what the judges see. It's not replaced. That's why it has no identifying info.

When I cellared the Northern California site a few years back we used the round labels. I though we removed the tags, but maybe I'm mistaken. They took it very seriously. Each entry was checked to ensure the labels and paperwork matched. I did see plenty of Sam Adams and short neck bottles.

They do put numbered labels on the cap, but ... Never mind. I just checked and the bottle labels have name etc on them. I thought the labels were taped on last year. Maybe that's just final round. Or maybe i'm making $4¡7 up.
