Flameout hops - filter out of fermenter?
« on: March 07, 2014, 04:22:06 pm »
When transferring from kettle to the fermenter should I filter out the hops? Normally I would but am wondering if late addition hops will contribute additional goodness instead of being cooled and removed so quick. I normally wouldn't be concerned about this but don't brew many hoppy beers...

I generally try to filter them out. By the time the get into the fermenter they've given up everything you want out of them.

Having said that, it's not a big deal if they make it into the fermenter. They just settle out with the trub.

Right ok. Just making sure I wasn't missing something. I will be dryhopping so it probably won't matter in the end if I filter or not. Thanks!

+1.  Yep.  I'm currently straining through a 5 gallon paint strainer bag placed inside my funnel, strained into my bucket. Some of the trub can be beneficial to yeast health/performance.  But as erockrph said, not a big deal in the long run - however, if you can remove most of the trub and hop debris pretty easily, why not ?

I use a 5 gallon paint strainer as well. I transferred it first to a bottling bucket with the strainer then into the fermenter bucket a couple feet below. The splashing helps me to aerate it since I don't use oxygen.

I drain the kettle through a knee high stocking. It's a finer mesh than the strainer bags, so I catch about all of the debris. Another added bonus is they are cheap... 2 for like 23 cents.
