Just got a new report:

Sterling, VA - November 2010

pH 7.8
Na 27
K    4
Ca 25
Mg  8
Total Hardness, CaCO3  96
SO4-S 8
Cl 37
Bicarbonate, HCO3 77
Total Alkalinity, CaCO3  63

There are definitely some variations from the report I got a year ago.  This indicates softer water with less calcium, way less sulfates and more chloride than the previous report.  I ordered a bunch of test supplies from Ward this time around and I'm going to submit one sample a quarter and track the changes to my water.

Sterling, VA - March 2011

pH 7.5
Na 26
K  2
Ca 32
Mg 8
Total Hardness, CaCO3 113
SO4-S 14
Cl 45
Bicarbonate, HCO3 71
Total Alkalinity, CaCO3  58

Interesting, I always thought Iowa City had harder water, but I guess not.  Thanks, brudda.

I'm fairly new at homebrewing and I just received my Drinking Water Quality Report in the mail the other day. I took one look at it and my brain exploded. Any chemists out there who can make heads or tails out of this thing? Here's a quick recap on the data one the report. Any red flags?

Residual Disinfectant Level (free chlorine) - 0.77 ppm
Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) - 28.8 ppb
Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) - 41.0 ppb

Turbidity - .10 NTU

Bromodichloromethane - 2.0 ppb
Choloform (trichloromethane) - 39.9 ppb
Dichloroacetic Acid - 10.5 ppb
Trichloroacetic Acid - 17.7 ppb
Monochloroacetic Acid - 1.0 ppb

Alkalinity - 15.7 ppm
Aluminum - .018 ppb
Calcium Hardness - 9.4 ppm
pH - 7.4 s.u.
Sodium - 6.5 ppm
Total Hardness - 11.8 ppm

Thanks Homebrewers!

just curious if anyone has bothered to do a Ward's Report on the Schmidt Brewery water in St. Paul, MN. Although they no longer make beer there, they have opened the water up to the public. 1,100 foot deep well; 50 cents per gallon. pH of 6.7 but no other info given on the website: http://www.findaspring.com/schmidt-brewery-well-st-paul-mn/
On a never-ending journey for the perfect pint of beer...

1111042072 Mountain Dairy Spring Water

Please find the mineral profile of mountain dairy spring water attached. Spring location is Highway S6 and Jameson (#6), Palomar Mountain. APN 136 210 01. Best of luck in your brewing endeavors. As a home brewer myself I used MD spring water for many a pint.

anyone have a good method for searching this topic... it would be great if we could come up with a way to make this user friendly. (Sorry, I'm only good at brain storming - actual workable ideas must come from elsewhere!)

Would love some feedback on my water profile.  The 2 numbers represent the 2 different pumps my water could come from.  They are pretty similar but thought I would be thorough.

Chlorine: 2.15, 1.85
Chloride: 39, 26
Nitrate: 1.4, 1.9
Nitrite: Not Detected, ND
Sulfate: 41, 53
Sodium: 19, 15
Magnesium: 9.6, 11
Potassium: ND, ND
Calcium: 32, 33
Lithium: ND, ND
Aluminum: .04, .04
Iron: ND, ND
Copper:  ND, ND
Zinc: .07, .10
Alkalinity: 51, 53
Hardness: 118, 125
Total Suspended Solids: .2, .2
Total Solids: 246, 250

Thanks in advance!

Lafayette, Indiana municipal water.

pH              7.3
Alkalinity      225 mg/L (as CaCO3)
Fluoride        1.1 mg/L
Orthophosphate  0.6 mg/L
Total phosphate 1.5 mg/L
Chloramines     1.1 mg/L
Lead            undetectable
Copper          undetectable
Iron            0.189 mg/L
Manganese       0.210 mg/L
Chlorides       39 mg/L
Sulfates        61 mg/L
Conductivity    670 µm HOS/cm
Total bacteria  0 (per what???)
Total hardness  350 mg/L as CaCO3
Grains hardness 21 grains/gal

The city uses chloramine to treat the water, so I'm a bit hesitant to use it at all, though I do now have a faucet filter.  Brewing suggestions for this water?  (And yes, I agree that my city certainly didn't give me much to go on here.)

Use one campden tablet per 20 gallons of water (less water is fine) to remove the chloramines.
