Most like because the SDK from Google turns off all privacy measures automatically and makes the developer force them to be turned off.  They also have recently made some controls unavailable to the user period.  Without location data, Google can't track you as well, which means they do make as much money.

The apps may not cost $$ but they are not free.

I have no idea, but my guess would be that the content is only licensed in certain countries.

I hear you and feeling rather stupid. For some reason I allowed myself to be blindsided by the trigger keywords AHA and Zymurgy. Note to my 56 year old brain!

Thanks

I almost always deny a location request. However, I have found Google Now to be entirely useful- learning as it goes so it is allowed to track me.

Also very circumspect about what gets loaded on my device. I'd say the Zymurgy app's location request is standard and not too evil. But I would eschew the tracking- there's little reason for it except for demographics.

If you turn on location and enter the right code, Denny appears and helps you brew.

Nah, Denny's a great guy.

Though it was a little weird that he *insisted* on being the big spoon...

I didn't intend to say the AHA is using the data for evil.  I really don't worry that they might know I'm reading Zymurgy at the mall.

I have no idea why the AHA app "needs" your location and did not want to start a political discussion.

This may sound stupid. But I joined the AHA about two more the ago. I know we have unlimited access to the magazines online. Do you get a hard copy in the mail as well?

Depends on what option you choose. I pay the extra $5 for the magazine. Totally worth it in my opinion.

New this year. Announced when they bumped the rates. If I had a tablet, maybe I'd skip it, but I really like flipping through it.
