Interesting quandary over WLP002 and WLP013
« on: April 16, 2014, 10:59:29 am »
So I'm brewing an ESB from BYO recipe. OG is 1.060 and expected FG is 1.014. It calls for WLP002 but that yeast doesn't attenuate as much as WLP013 and beersmith puts the  OG closer to 1.019. I know the 002 is he classic strain but how will it attenuate that much especially when the recipe calls for a mash temp of 154? Curious

This is an easy fix… Go into your BeerSmith settings and change the attenuation for 002 to 77%. Problem solved. ;)

Point being that recipe software can't possibly know how a given strain will attenuate for a given mash schedule in your brewhouse. Only you can tell it that.

OK, I guess I need to say it again...as great as Beersmith is, any software that attempts to predict FG is only making a wild guess.  You could do as well yourself.  The attenuation rating of a yeast is not necessarily an indication of the attenuation you can expect to get.  If I was you, I'd juts pretend that section doesn't exist and forget it.
Life begins at 60.....1.060, that is!

Exactly what I wanted to hear. I believe I'm just gonna pitch the slurry of WLP 013 that I have in the fridge instead of going out and buying a new vial of WLP 002 and just let her ride!
